Corban's Bostwick & Miller Lead Warriors to Victory Over Geoducks of Evergreen
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Behind veteran leadership from senior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.) and sophomore Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.), Corban's women's basketball team picked up their third overall win of the season thanks to a 61-47 win over Evergreen to open conference play Friday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Starting their 2008-09 conference campaign, the Warriors hosted an Evergreen squad that had been unbeaten on the season, coming in with an impressive 5-0 mark. Unfortunately for the Geoducks, that undefeated mark would end tonight.
In the opening minute and a half of the game, Corban fell behind thanks to a 5-0 run by the Geoducks to earn an early five-point advantage with 18:30 showing on the clock. Unfortunately for the Geoducks, that would be the largest lead of the game. Behind a set of jumpers from Bostwick, Miller, and freshman Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.), the Warriors took over the lead by one (10-9). With 12:59 showing on the clock, Bostwick added a pair of free throws, and the Warriors had a three-point lead (12-9). The Warriors would make that lead five points (16-11) with 9:05 left on the clock, thanks to a lay-up by freshman Joani Reimer (Ferndale, Wash.). From there, the Geoducks would use another five-point run over the next three minutes to tie the game at 16-16 with 6:44 left in the half. After tying the ball game, the Warriors went on a 12-6 run that included a pair of free throws from Steigleman with five seconds left to end the half with a 28-22 lead.
In the second half, Corban used an opening 13-5 run in the first 5:03 to grab a 14-point lead (41-27), including four points each by Miller and junior Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.). The Geoducks would battle back and cut the Warrior lead to seven (46-39) with 10:08 left in the game. In response, Corban went on a 6-1 run over the next three minutes to stop the Geoduck run and led the game by 14 points (54-40) with 7:06 remaining in the game. From there, the Warriors simply would not let Evergreen back in the game, putting the game seemingly out of reach with a game-high 19-point lead (61-42) with only 2:03 left. Evergreen rallied to end the game on a 5-0 run but it was too little, too late for the Geoducks, as Corban won the game by the final margin of 14 points (61-47).
Along with Miller's game-high 12-point scoring performance, Bostwick was the only other Warrior in double figures with 10 points to go along with a team-high seven assists. Steigleman, Tribble, Reimer, and freshman Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) rounded out the Warriors' scoring posting nine, seven, six, and six points respectively.
Evergreen was led by Rosalind Lee’s 10-point, 10-rebound performance, while a trior of Geoducks -- Alex Saab, Kristi Auckland, and Britney Knotts -- rounded out the scoring with eight, six, and five points respectively.
As a team, the Warriors shot 23-for-52 (44.2%) from the field, as well as 14-for-19 (73.7%) from the line. The Warriors only shot four times behind the arc, shooting 1-for-4 (25.0%) from behind the three-point line. On the opposite side, Evergreen shot 17-for-60 (28.3%) from the field that included a 4-for-18 (22.2%) outing from behind the arc and 9-for-21 (42.9%) from the charity stripe.
With the win, tenth-year head coach Terry Williams’ Warrior squad improves to 3-4 overall, including a 1-0 conference mark. With the loss, Evergreen drops their first game of the season, dropping to a 5-1 overall, and a 0-1 conference mark. Corban returns to the floor on Saturday, December 6th, when it hosts the Eagles of Northwest beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
