Geoducks Pull Away from Cavaliers for 4th Straight Win
PORTLAND, Ore.—With 51 combined points from Nate Menefee and Steve Trotter, The Evergreen State fended off the Cavaliers 95-81 in Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday night.
With the results, the Geoducks improved to 5-1 on the year with a 2-0 mark in CCC play while Concordia dropped to 5-4 overall and 0-2 in league action.
In a game which featured nine ties and a one-point spread at the half, Evergreen used a 15-4 run over the final three minutes to close the game for a 14-point win.
Concordia last held the lead with the 63-62 with exactly 10 minutes remaining and would tie the match at 67-67 with 7:49 left ninth via a Desmond Meray drive to the basket. Beginning with a Menafee thee pointer, the Geoducks would rattle off seven straight points to begin their momentum down the final stretch.
Menafee would end the game with 26 points after making 11-of-18 attempts from the floor. One point back, Trotter added 25 points after converting 9-of-10 shot attempts, including all three attempts from beyond the three-point line and all four shots from the free throw line. Michael Ward added 17 points, giving the trio 71 percent of the Evergreen scoring output.
Alex Tiefenthaler led the Cavs with 22 points while Steven Vaughan added 17 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Concordia was outrebounded 39-to-29 in the match and shot just 57 percent from the free throw line, including an 8-for-18 effort in the second half. Off the bench, Jourdan Sweeney posted 16 points and five rebounds for the Cavs.
Concordia returns to action on Dec. 11 when it hosts George Fox with a 7:30 p.m. opening tip.
