Corban's Steigleman Nets 25 in Win over Northwest
SALEM, Ore. – Senior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) scored a game-high 25 points on 9-for-20 shooting from the field, as Corban's women's basketball defeated the Eagles of Northwest, 75-54, while sophomore Emily Goette (Aumsville, Ore.) registered a double-double Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Along with Steigleman, Goette registered 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds while junior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.) added 12 points and a game-high seven assists. Junior Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.), freshman Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.), and freshman Rachel Harter (Grass Valley, Calif.) registered 7, 6, and 6 points respectively, while Connell pulled six boards.
In the first half, Corban jumped out to a quick 10-4 advantage after the opening seven-plus minutes before Northwest crept back within a point (18-17) following back-to-back free throws by Erika Hornyak with 8:41 on the clock. With the score tied at 22-all with 4:54 remaining in the opening half, Corban pulled ahead by four points (30-26) before allowing the Eagles to score the final five points and take a slim one-point lead (31-30) into the locker room.
In the second half, the host Warriors used a 19-8 run over the opening 5:53 to grab it first double digit lead of the contest (49-39). With 12:42 remaining in the game, Northwest's Brittany Bowsher connected on a jumper to pull the visiting Eagles within eight points (49-41) before the lid went onto the NU basket. Over the next nine minutes and 56 seconds, Corban used a 22-6 run to pull away for good as the Warriors secured a 24-point lead (71-47) before Northwest connected on another field goal via a three-pointer by Hornyak with 2:46 showing on the clock. Over the remaining two-plus minutes, each team scored four points for the final margin of 21 points (75-54).
Northwest was led by Hornyak, who scored a team-high 18 points on 5-for-15 shooting from the field to go along with a 3-for-8 performance from beyond the arc and a perfect 5-for-5 showing at the free throw line. Along with Hornyak, Bowsher was held to a mere 12 points on 5-for-18 shooting from the field which was five points below her season average of 17.4 that was second in the conference coming into tonight's game. On the boards, Steph Flatau pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while Dani Drivstuen and a pair of Eagles grabbed six and three boards respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 31-for-70 (44.3%) from the field including 6-for-21 (28.6%) from behind the three-point line and 7-for-12 (58.3%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Northwest was 18-for-55 (32.7%) from the field that included performances of 3-for-16 (18.8%) from beyond the arc and 15-for-22 (68.2%) from the charity stripe.
With the victory, Corban improves to 8-15 overall, 4-9 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest falls to 2-19 overall, 1-12 in CCC action and extends its winless streak to 12 games. The Warriors will return to the floor on Saturday, February 2nd, when Corban hosts The Evergreen State College beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
