Yotes Run Past Concordia, 63-43
PORTLAND, Ore.— A battle of opponents with 6-2 marks in Cascade Collegiate Conference play turned into a competition of who can hold onto the ball as The College of Idaho defeated Concordia University 63-53 in a game marred by 55 combined turnovers.
With the win, The College of Idaho moved to 10-6 on the season and 7-2 in the CCC while Concordia dropped to 10-9 overall and 6-3 in the league.
After heading into intermission with a 35-26 lead, the Coyotes held the Cavs to just 17 points in the second half to pull away for the 20-point win. Concordia enjoyed two short leads in the first half, the largest a three-point spread, 8-5, at the 16:20 mark. Down by one with just over 11 minutes remaining in the period, the Coyotes scored 13 straight points to take the lead it would not relinquish.
The College of Idaho’s Whintey Clark (Jerome, Ida.) and Christon Vander Esch (Riggings, Ida.) each scored 16 points to lead the Coyote attack. Clark’s evening was highlighted by a 4-of-8 shooting performance from the three-point line with the rest of the team shooting 5-of-19 from beyond the arc. Vaner Esch hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds.
Maryam Razavi (Tualatin, Ore.) and Denise Benedict (Ridgefield, Wash.) paced the Cavaliers with each recording 10 points in the loss.
Neither team shot well from the field with COI ending with a slight edge, 38.7 to 35.1 percent, over the Cavaliers. Concordia turned the ball over 29 times compared to 26 for the visitors.
Concordia will host Eastern Oregon on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. while The College of Idaho travels to Salem, Ore., to face Corban College.
