Owens' 9 Treys Leads C of I to Road Win over NCC
EUGENE, Ore. -- Northwest Christian College fell victim to a poor second half on Saturday night, losing to The College of Idaho, 73-63. The Beacons shot 55.6% in the first half but hit just 8-of-26 attempts in the second frame. The Yotes’ Josh Owen didn’t help the matter as he scored 33 points off nine three-pointers.
The Yotes pulled out to a 8-0 lead out of the gates but the Beacons fought back and eventually tied the game at 20-20 with 10:50 to play as Josh Jarrett hit a layup for his tenth point of the game to that point. A Jordan Whittenburg three-point play just one minute later gave NCC their first lead of the game, 25-23. College of Idaho came back to take back the lead 30-28, but an Andrew Miller layup and Erick Quick-Warner three-pointer sparked a 9-0 run for NCC that saw the Beacons ahead 37-30 with 3:51 to play.
Over the final four minutes of the half the Coyotes got the points right back with their own 9-0 run, capped off by a trey from Owen. Owen and Jarrett both had 14 points in the half and Northwest Christian finished the first period shooting 56% from the floor.
The Beacons kept things close for most of the second half and when Jarrett hit one-of-two free-throw attempts with 1:44 remaining, NCC trailed just 66-63. Steffen Spinks hit a three-pointer on the ensuing possession and the rest was text-book for the Coyotes, who made four free-throws to ice the win.
Jarrett finished with a team-high 17 points for Northwest Christian (5-11, 2-4 CCC) adding eight rebounds. Michael Van Loon came off the bench to score 14 points, all in the second half, including a 3-for-3 performance from beyond the arc. Whittenburg also had three treys and finished with 12.
College of Idaho (6-9, 3-2) had two other players in double-figures in support of Owens, including Bryan Champ who scored the first six points of the game on a pair of three-pointers before finishing with 12 points, eight rebounds and a game-high five assists. Kurt Nielson finished with ten points for the victors.
The Beacons return to action next Friday when they travel to face Oregon Tech with tip-off time scheduled for 7:30 pm. The College of Idaho will head home to play host to #6 Oregon Tech on Tuesday night.
