SAN MARCOS, Calif.—After firing a combined 312 in Monday’s opening round, the Concordia University men’s golf team picked up two strokes and two places to finish ninth overall at the CSU-San Marcos Invitational.

The event was the first of the spring season for the Cavaliers. Concordia will return to the links on Feb. 24 for the two-day Northwest Collegiate Shootout.

With a 310 in the second round, Concordia jumped ahead of UC San Diego (308-319—627) and Pomona-Pitzer College (308-323—631) in the team race while California Baptist used a 297 in the second round to move from a tie for 12th place to a tie for sixth. Fresno Pacific (294-292—586) returned with the best round of the tournament by carding a 292 for a two-day total of 586 strokes to outpace Point Loma Nazarene (300-293—593) by seven strokes for the team title. First-day leader Grant Doverspike (70-69—139), competing for Fresno State, matched LaVerne’s Andrew Kramer (72-69—141) with 69 strokes on day two to take medalist honors by two strokes.

Tyler Austin led the Cavaliers with a 24th-place finish, moving up five positions with a 75 in the second round for a 152. Also moving up the leaderboard, Craig Dehning used a 76 to finish in a tie for 40th, 17 slots higher than his starting point entering the final round.
