PORTLAND, Ore. -- Gage Aker of Wilson High School in Portland has signed a letter of intent to play basketball and continue his education at Concordia University, Cavalier head coach Brad Barbarick announced today.

Aker is currently averaging 9.6 points, 7.7 assists and 7.8 rebounds per game for the Trojans. The 6-foot-3 point guard is one of the leaders in both assists and rebounds in the Portland Interscholastic League (PIL) 6A division while leading Wilson to a 14-6 overall (5-2 PIL) record. The Trojans have been ranked as high as sixth in the state so far during the 2007-08 season. As a junior, Aker was named the Trojans defensive player of the year and was an honorable mention All-PIL selection.

In the classroom, Aker carries a 3.71 grade point average, is a member of the National Honor Society and has been named a scholar athlete by the Multnomah Athletic Club. In addition, Aker has also been named by the March of Dimes Greater Portland Chapter Youth of the Year.

Gage will be the third member of his family to wear a Cavalier basketball uniform. Gage follows in the footsteps of his father Scott, who played for the Cavaliers in the early 1980s and is a 1984 Concordia graduate and his brother Cody who is a current senior co-captain on the Cavalier roster and will graduate from CU in the Spring of 2008. Cody Aker currently leads the Cavaliers in rebounding at 6.8 per game and is the second leading scorer at 14.3 points per game.

“He is a true point guard at 6-3, Gage will bring a dynamic set of skills to our team next season,” Barbarick said. “I am looking forward to coaching Gage as he brings the same leadership qualities to our program that his brother Cody has provided for the last four seasons. We are indeed excited to have a person of Gage’s talent and character join our team.”
