Northwest Rallies to Upset College of Idaho

KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Trailing by as many as 21 points with 11 minutes to go in the second half, the Northwest University women came from behind to defeat the College of Idaho, 77-74 in and exciting Cascade Conference game tonight in Kirkland. Guard Rachel Travis hit six 3-pointers in the second half to help in the Eagles comeback.

C of I jumped out to an early 16-9 lead in the first half and Whitney Clark’s jumper at the 7:12 mark would give the Yotes a 22-13 lead. A 3-pointer by Kayla Brewer would increase the C of I lead to 13 at 29-16 with 5:26 remaining in the first half. Whitney Owen would give C of I a 14 point lead wither jumper with 1:25 to go but NU’s Erika Hornyak with sink a jumper of her own to cut the Yotes’ lead to 39-27 at the half.


With 18:10 to go in the game, Rachel Travis sunk a trey to help the Eagles get within 9 at 39-30, but the Yotes would go on an 8-1 run capped by Whitney Owen’s three pointer to make the score, 47-31, with 16:12 remaining. C of I would slowly begin to pull away and Katee Brewer’s trey at the 13:42 mark would increase C of I’s lead to 58-37. With 11:04 left in the game and C of I in control, Northwest began their comeback with Erika Hornyak’s lay up and a Rachel Travis 3-pointer which would cut the lead down to 63-48 with 10:31 remaining. NU would go on an 11-2 run from that point as the Eagles Brittany Bowsher would drain a 3-pointer to cut C of I’s lead to 65-54 with 8:39 to go in the game. With the Coyotes up by eight, 74-66, and 4:24 left on the clock, NU would go on their final 9-0 run as Rachel Travis would sink another three pointer with 33 seconds left in the game for Northwest’s first lead of the game. A turnover by C of I on the next play and a foul would send Erika Hornyak to the Free throw line where she hit both free throws to give the Eagles the 77-74 upset victory.


Guard Rachel Travis (Jr., North Bend, WA) led the Northwest U. (4-22, 3-15 CCC) come back going 7 for 10 from the 3-point line and finishing with a game high 28 points. Freshman Erika Hornyak (Everett, WA) contributed 16 points while teammate Brittany Bowsher (Jr., Issaquah, WA) score a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Eagles shot 58% from 2-point range and 63.6% from the 3-point arc in the second half.


Magen Dufferrena (Sr., Denio, NV) led the College of Idaho (16-9, 13-5 CCC) with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Senior Whitney Clark (Jerome, ID) added14 points and teammate Kayla Brewer (So., Arco, ID) dropped in 14 points for the Coyotes. C of I out rebounded NU, 39-37 and shot 43% for the contest. The Yotes shot 43% from 3-point range going 9 for 21 from the arc.
Northwest U. wraps up their season in Portland next weekend as they take on Cascade College and Warner Pacific on Friday and Saturday night. C of I returns to Caldwell to host Eastern Oregon on February 19.
