Bostwick Sets School-Record for Assists on 'Think Pink' Night
SALEM, Ore. -- Junior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.) set a new school-record for most assists in a single game with a career and season-high 14, as Corban's women's basketball team defeated Warner Pacific, 74-69, Friday on Think Pink Night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
On a night when the Warriors, in conjunction with the Corban College athletic department, Corban's Associated Student Body (ASB) Government, and Warner Pacific, were attempting to heighten awareness about breast cancer, Corban got a game-high tying 21 points from sophomore Emily Goette (Aumsville, Ore.) along with 18 points from senior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.).
In the opening half, the visiting Knights jumped out to a six-point lead (12-6) in the first four-plus minutes before Corban came back via a 10-4 run to knot the game at 16-all with 12:10 remaining. Neither team had more than a four-point lead until the 3:38 mark of the opening half when Corban secured a five-point advantage (30-25) following a jumper by Bostwick. The Warriors repeated their five-point lead (32-27) two-and-a-half minutes later and then extended their lead to a first half high of eight points (35-27) heading into the locker room.
In the second half, Corban used a 13-4 run over the opening 3:26 en route to securing its largest lead of the game (48-31). Using a never-say-die attitude, Warner Pacific mounted a comeback over the next 2:35 and pulled within six points (48-42) via a 9-0 run that was spearheaded by five points from Danica Wilson. Corban recaptured its double digit lead (58-44) with just under 11 minutes remaining before the visiting Knights got as close as a point (70-69) with 2:20 showing on the clock. Fortunately for the Warriors, Warner Pacific could not score again as Corban got a jumper from Steigleman and a pair of free throws from Bostwick down the stretch to preserve the victory, 74-69, and remain in the playoff hunt for the eighth and final spot.
Along with the aforementioned duo of Goette and Steigleman, Bostwick added eight points to go along with her game-high in assists while fellow junior Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.) chipped in with an identical eight points. Freshman Rachel Harter (Grass Valley, Calif.) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, while senior Mandy Peterson (Portland, Ore.) and Goette grabbed six and five boards respectively.
Warner Pacific was led by Wilson, who scored a game-high tying 21 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field to go along with a 3-for-6 showing at the free throw line. Along with Wilson, Rachel Newby and Karissa Boyd added 13 and 9 points respectively while Meaghan Ainsworth pulled down a team-high six rebounds for the Knights.
As a team, Corban shot 30-for-71 (42.3%) from the field including 1-for-11 (9.1%) from behind the three-point line and 13-for-20 (65.0%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Warner Pacific was 27-for-46 (58.7%) from the field that included performances of 2-for-5 (40.0%) from beyond the arc and 13-for-20 (65.0%) from the charity stripe.
With the victory, Corban improves to 9-18 overall, 5-12 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific falls to 5-21 overall, 3-14 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the floor on Saturday, February 16th, when Corban host Cascade College beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center on Senior Recognition Night.
NOTE: Corban seniors Jessica Steigleman and Mandy Peterson will be honored in a halftime ceremony that will show the women's basketball program's appreciation for the past four seasons in which they have donned the navy and gold for the Warriors.
