Concordia Drops 9-8 Decision to Puget Sound
McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Senior Michael Olsen hit the game-winning double in the top of the 11th inning as the Puget Sound Loggers won their 2008 season opener, 9-8, over Concordia at the Doran Auto Group Spring Classic hosted by Linfield College.
The Loggers (1-0) got on the scoreboard in the top of the second when Olsen hit a two-run home run over the left field fence that scored Joe Newland and gave Puget Sound a 2-0 lead.
Following a single Concordia (0-3) run in the bottom of the inning and three more in the bottom of the third, the Loggers took the lead again in the top of the fourth when Jason Powell hit a three-run homer to give Puget Sound a 5-4 lead.
Concordia evened things up in the bottom of inning and the teams traded runs in the seventh and the eight to make it an 8-7 contest in favor of the Cavaliers.
With Olsen’s second shot of the day, a solo home run in the ninth, the game was forced into extra frames nodded at eight runs apiece. . After a scoreless 10th, Gregorio Beck singled to left field to get on base and then advanced to second on a balk, setting up Olsen's game-winning double for his fourth RBI of the day.
Ryan Gustafson earned the win for the Loggers, allowing just two hits in three scoreless innings with one strikeout and one walk. Brett Hawley took the loss for the Cavs, pitching six innings and allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out seven batters.
Ben Lanier, Jimmy Rudig , Casey McLeod and Sean Myrom all collected multiple hits for the Cavs. Myrom recorded three singles and two RBI in six at-bats.
Concordia returns to the field when it faces George Fox in a single game nine-inning affair in Newberg, Ore. First pitch is set for noon.
