CU's Greg Schultz set a pair of school records.
Cavs Come Up Big at Pioneer Open with a Pair of Team Titles
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Concordia University track and field teams won 24 events, set nine school records and added a number of new or improved indoor national qualifying marks at the Lewis and Clark Pioneer Open today. In the team scoring, the women totaled 229 points, 102 more than runner-up Lewis and Clark, while the men scored 196 points, 60 more than runner-up Warner Pacific.
“We were blessed with very nice conditions for this time of year and the athletes did a great job of taking advantage of that to get some good marks in a number of events,” Concordia head coach Randy Dalzell said. “Greg Schultz had a huge day in setting school records in both the outdoor hammer and the indoor weight throw.”
His mark in the hammer, an event Schultz finished second at the NAIA national championships in, represented a personal record by seven feet.
Improving their automatic qualifying marks in the triple jump, Stephen Marshall and Lakeesha Cadogan made it a CU sweep in the event while Jameson Futter set a new school record in the long jump with a distance of 22-0 3/4.
On the track, Cortney Bannister also ran two great hurdle races with an indoor qualifier in the 55-meter version, crossing just .02 seconds behind the auto standard. Newcomer Alice Taylor tallied two school records with a runner-up result in the 1,500 with a time of 4:59.72 and a winning performance in the 3,000 with a 10:55.77 despite battling sickness this week.
Concordia will next compete at the 2008 NAIA Indoor National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn., from March 6-8.
