Freshman Jessie Jones put the Warriors on the board with her first collegiate home run -- a 2-run shot to center field -- today against Puget Sound.
Late Rally Falls Short in Loss to Loggers of Puget Sound
PORTLAND, Ore. – A two-run home run in the sixth inning by freshman Jessie Jones (Gladstone, Ore.) and a solo shot by junior Karlee Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) in the seventh inning were not enough, as Corban's softball team fell to the Loggers of Puget Sound, 5-3, Saturday to close out its play at the Northwest Cup.
Closing out the opening day of the Northwest Cup, Corban allowed the designated visiting Loggers to score five runs over the opening three innings via four hits before mounting a come back over the game's final two innings.
Trailing by five runs heading into the bottom of the sixth innings, the Warriors, who had been held to a mere two hits, exploded for four hits over the final two innings highlighted by Jones' one-out 2-run home run to center field that scored sophomore Jessica Pierce (Kennewick, Wash.). Pierce reached via a walk before Jones cracked her first collegiate home run to bring Corban within a mere three runs at 5-2.
In the seventh inning, Sisler pulled the Warriors within striking distance (5-3) via her first home run of the season -- a solo shot to left field -- before Puget Sound's defense stepped up to the challenge and shut the door on any possible Warrior come back.
Freshman Jennifer Kollaer (Albany, Ore.) led the Warriors' offensive attack with a pair of hits (both singles) in three at-bats, while Jones, Sisler, sophomore Josie Strange (Chehalis, Wash.), and senior Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.) each registered a hit.
In the circle, junior Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) began the game for the Warriors and went the first four innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits with a game-high tying five strikeouts before handing the ball over to Kollaer for the game's final three innings.
For Puget Sound, Lindsay Fujita led the Loggers' attack with a 2-for-3 performance that included a pair of runs scored. Meanwhile, five other UPS players roped a hit each led by Nikki LaFemina's RBI single in the third inning.
Pitching-wise for Puget Sound, Andi Doerflinger went the distance, allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits to go along with a game-high tying five K's.
With the loss, Corban falls to 3-6 on the season while Puget Sound improves to 2-0 on the young season. The Warriors will return to the diamond for a home-opening double header on Wednesday, February 27th, when they host the Pioneers of Lewis & Clark College beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Warrior Field.
