Pulfrey Powers Cavs Past Whitworth with 15 Strikeouts; Fall to Willamette in Afternoon Affair
PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore pitcher Danielle Pulfrey compiled 15 strikeouts en route to a two-hit complete game to lead Concordia to 1 7-0 win against Whitworth University in the opening game of the Northwest Cup held at Delta Park.
With the win, Concordia improved o 2-0 on the young season. The game represented the season opener for Whitworth.
After forcing a pair of fly-ball outs in foul territory in the first, Pulfrey struck out the side in the second and notched two strikeouts in each of the next five innings for her 15-k haul.
Whitworth’s Jessie LaPlante would break up a perfect game in the fourth with a single to the shortstop while Halley Cey would also sneak a hit with a single to right field in the sixth.
Concordia jumped out early with three runs in the second via a pair of two-out hits highlighted by a Nicole Illias double to deep left center to drive home Janelle Cristifaro and Shayna Ostlund.
With five hits in the fifth, the Cavs added four runs for the 7-0 finale. Ostlund went 3-for-3 at the plate as Concordia gathered 10 hits in the contest.
Jessie LaPlante took the loss for Whitworth by allowing three runs in three innings of work.
In the second game of the Northwest Cup for the Cavs, Willamette tapped CU starter Cristifaro for five runs in the fourth to run away with an 8-4 win.
With the loss, Concordia dropped to 2-1 while Willamette improved to 2-0 overall.
Concordia managed to cut the four-run lead to one with a single score in the fourth and three more in the sixth, but saw the rally cut short when the Bearcats mustered three runs in the fifth to double up the Cavs.
In a 2-for-2 night, Tina Garcia connected on her first double of the season to open up the fourth before recording an RBI via a sacrifice fly to center field in the fifth.
Debra Bohren pitched four innings for Willamette for the win, allowing four hits, two runs and two walks while striking out a single batter.
Tomorrow, Concordia will face Pacific University at 12:30 p.m. before matching up against Puget Sound at 2:30.
