Corban Turns in Best Showing of Season at Mt. Hood
GRESHAM, Ore. – Senior Danielle Jordan (Medford, Ore.), junior Ben Snell (Spray, Ore.), and freshman Bianca Davis (Ontario, Ore.) each brought home trophies, as Corban's men's and women's track team turned in its best all-around performance of the season Saturday at the Mt. Hood Invite.
After having the scheduled Linfield Invite cancelled, second-year head coach Norm Berney and Mt. Hood's coach Matt Hart quickly put together another meet. On this particular day, the only events that were held were the heptathlon and decathlon events, as well as the 5,000 meter run.
On the women's side, Jordan paced four Warriors that competed in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:41.32. Fellow senior Jill Nielsen (Baker City, Ore.), senior Sara Aikin (Lebanon, Ore.), and freshman Ali Ghavami (Keizer, Ore.) rounded out the Corban 5,000 meter runners with time of 19:12.85, 20:01.03, and 20:07.10 respectively.
In the long jump, Davis brought home the Warriors' second medal with a distance of 4.78 meters (15 feet, 6 1/2 inches). Davis tied with Mt. Hood's Stephany Pitts, while fellow freshman Lauren Nolz (Salem, Ore.) finished 11th with a jump of 4.13 meters.
In the women's 800 meter run, sophomore Tera Stegner (Damascus, Ore.) finished as the runner-up in a time of 2:22.44 which was a mere 1.36 seconds behind the race winner, Sheryl Brock who was running unattached. Along with Stegner, junior Carli Moller (Vancouver, Wash.), freshman Erin Laughlin (Ephrata, Wash.), freshman Karissa Griggs (Athena, Ore.), and Ghavami rounded out the Warriors' 800 meter competitors with times of 2:27.93, 2:33.07, 2:33.08, and 2:36.73 respectively.
On the men's side, Snell brought home a gold and silver medal thanks to winning the 5,000 meter run in a time of 16:44.77 before earning runner-up honors in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:16.01. In the 5,000 meter run, Snell beat out a pair of Warriors -- junior Brian Beeson (Soldotna, Alaska) and freshman Kevin Cook (Ashland, Ore.) -- by just over a minute combined.
In the 1,500 meter run, junior Jason Bernard (Salem, Ore.) and freshman Jason Hardrath (Baker City, Ore.) competed along with Snell as the duo finished the race in times of 4:24.20 and 4:28.36 respectively to bring home 4th and 5th place showings respectively.
Corban's track teams will run again on Friday, March 21st, when the Warriors compete at the annual Charles Bowles Classic at McCullough Stadium in Salem beginning at noon.
