Western Oregon Doubles Up Concordia 8-4
MONMOUTH, Ore. – Western Oregon sent two runners across the plate in the seventh and again in the eight inning, breaking open a tie game to defeat Concordia 8-4 at WOU Field on Sunday.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 10-8 on the season while Concordia dropped its second straight to fall to 3-5.
Trailing 4-0 after WOU collected a pair of runs in the fist and the second inning, Concordia cut the lead to one with a two-out triple with the bases loaded by Ryan Sussenguth. Roberto Reyes, Derek Shigano and Ben Lanier opened the inning with three straight singles before Sussenguth’s three-run drive to right-center field.
In the top of the seventh pinch hitter Jon Houts tied the game at 4-4 with a double to center to send Sussenguth home from second base.
The tie wouldn’t last long as the Wolves’ Taylor Mieres cracked a two-run in the bottom of the seventh. WOU would score an additional two runs with the aid of an RBI double by Dylan Bruck and a Concordia error in the eighth before relief pitcher Mike Cusick would tally two strikeouts in the ninth to preserve the win.
Cusick pitched the final three innings for WOU to record his second win of the year, allowing two hits and one run while striking out seven batters. Brett Hawley received the loss for the Cavs, working the team’s final two innings and allowing four earned runs.
Concordia resumes action on March 8 when it hosts the University of British Columbia for the first of two double headers. Opening pitch for is set for noon on Saturday and Sunday at The Yard.
