LA GRANDE, Ore. - Mark Morris High School's Kayli Johnston has signed a letter of intent to play for the Eastern Oregon University softball team in 2009.  The Longview, Wash., native was a first team all-league pitcher last season as a junior.

The Mounties will graduate three pitchers at the end of this season, so the signing of Johnston is an important one.

Kayli won eight consecutive games last season and finished the year with an ERA of 4.66.  Johnston was Mark Morris High School's MVP last year and a tremendous student as well with a GPA of 3.96.

Head coach Missy Wheeler is excited about adding Johnston to the team. "We are pleased to have Kayli become a part of our softball program next year," said Wheeler. "We were looking to bring a couple of talented young pitchers into our program and Kayli fits what we were looking for."

Wheeler added, "She has great movement on her pitches and has the potential to make an impact in our conference over the next four years."

In an interview earlier in the week Johnston herself expressed her excitement about becoming a Mountaineer. "During my visit I stayed with some of the girls on the team and really liked them," said Johnston. "They have a well-run program and seem to be at the level that I'm comfortable with. The town is small but it grows on you and they have a lot of fun things for the students to do."
