Bats Silent as Concordia Falls 4-0 to No. 2 Lewis-Clark State
PORTLAND, Ore. – The No. 2-ranked Lewis-Clark State Warriors scored two in the third and two in the seventh to take the opening game of a three-day series 4-0 at Concordia University on Friday.
With the result, LC State improved to 33-4 on the season while Concordia dropped to 11-15.
After retiring the first six batters in 10 pitches, CU starter Ben Rue (Silverton, Ore./Silverton H.S.) entered trouble in the third inning as the Warriors gathered three hits and two walks en route to a 2-0 lead. LC State capitalized on a bases-loaded walk generated by Kyle Greene (Lewiston, Idaho) followed by a single trough the left side by Brian Ward (Huntington Beach, Calif.).
Rue prevented further damage by striking out Warrior designated hitter Sean Halton (Fresno, Calif.) with the bases full to end the ending.
With starter Matt Fitts (Santa Rosa, Calif.) limiting the Cavaliers to three hits, LC State added two runs via a Paul Martin (Kennewick, Wash.) homer in the seventh.
Fitts pitched the full nine innings for the win to move to 7-0 on the season. Fitts struck out nine while issuing a single walk during his stretch on the mound. With two earned runs in six innings of work, Rue took the loss for CU to drop to 2-2.
The two squads continue their series on Saturday with a single nine-inning affair beginning at 1 p.m. on the campus of Concordia University.
