KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- Oregon Tech’s Derek Jacobson struck out five and allowed only four T’Bird hits while center fielder Trent Smith contributed three hits of his own in game 1, as the Owls split a Region I doubleheader today over University of British Columbia, winning game one 6-2 but dropping the nightcap 10-6. The Owls are now 16-24 on the year, remaining 4-11 in conference action

UBC went up 1-0 in the second inning only to see Tech erupt for four runs in the bottom of the third on a Ryson Mauricio sac fly, a Bryan Barrington RBI single and a double by Sean Teaters that drove in two more runs, as Tech went up 4-1. Teaters would drive in another run in the fifth on a sac fly and one more run in the sixth, on a UBC wild pitch, giving the Owls a 6-1 lead. The T’Birds would score a single run in the seventh, but that would be all the scoring, as Tech would go on to win by the final of 6-2.

Along with Smith’s three hits, Frank Drake was 2-2 at the plate, while Teaters drove in three runs and Mauricio and Barrington would drive in one run each. Jacobson moved to 2-5 on the mound for the Owls. A UBC homerun by Ryan Pilgrim in the second was the T’Birds only RBI in game one.

Game two saw the T’Birds bats come alive, jumping out to a 5-2 lead after three innings and then a Mike Styrna two run homerun in the fifth put the T’Birds up 7-2. Tech cut the lead to 7-4 with two runs in the sixth on a Mike Myhre pinch hit sac fly and an RBI single by Tech shortstop Cory Spires, but UBC would put a run across in the seventh and two in the eight to increase the lead to 10-4. In the ninth for the Owls, a Ryson Mauricio two run homerun cut the lead to 10-6, but UBC reliever Andrew LaFleur would stike out the side in the ninth, taking the nightcap 10-6.

Both Ryson Mauricio and Sean Teaters went for three hits for Tech and drove in two runs each, while Spires and Myhre picked up an RBI. UBC connected for 15 hits in game 2 with Pilgrim, Jordan Pandoff and Alex White finishing with three hits each. UBC’s Eric Brown picked up the win in his five innings of work, improving to 4-1 on the hill.

The Owls will complete the four game series with UBC tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled for 11:00 AM at Kiger Stadium.
