PORTLAND, Ore. – After a 9-3 loss in the opener, Concordia struck for two runs in the first and held on for a 2-1 win to split a doubleheader against The College of Idaho at The Yard on Sunday.

With the results, Concordia moved to 13-20 on the season while the Yotes left the field with a 20-22 overall record. Only the first game counted towards the conference ledger.

After sending a runner home in the visiting half of the first, the Yotes batted around in the second to score four more to take a healthy 5-0 lead. C of I repeated the feat in the third with a quartet of runners crossing the plate for a commanding 9-0 margin.

The Totes tagged the CU pitchers for 11 hits and were also aided by four errors in the first three innings.

On the mound for the Yotes, Joey Zubizarreta (Boise, Idaho) kept the Cavs in check with five strikeouts in seven shutout innings. Zubizarreta allowed six hits and walked one on way to the win.

Concordia would finally nix the zero on the scoreboard with a solo run in the eighth with an RBI single by Brad Himes (Chatsworth, Calif./Bishop Alemeny H.S.) to send Ben Lanier (Kinston, N.C./Kinston H.S.) home. The Cavs would scratch out two more runs in the ninth with Roberto Reyes (Monterrey, Mexico) and Ryan Sussenguth (Gresham, Ore./Sam Barlow H.S.) each collecting an RBI.

CU’s Myles Stratton pitched four scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out two opponents.

Bryan Champ (Boise, Idaho) and Jake Miller (Idaho Falls, Idaho) each tallied three RBI’s for the Yotes.

In the second game of the day and fourth of the series, Concordia used opening singles by Tyler Anderson (Twin Falls, Idaho/Twin Falls H.S.) and Sam McCormick (Keizer, Ore./McNary H.S.) to help generate a pair of quick runs. Shawn Turner (Hermiston, Ore./Hermiston H.S.) followed the hits with a sacrifice and Kyle Schnieder (Brush Prairie, Wash./Hockinson H.S.) made the move payoff by belting a double down the left-field line.

The runs would prove to hold for CU as The College of Idaho managed just a solo run in the third with Brad Carlsen (Reno, Nev.) advancing home on a passed ball.

Dylan Smith (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River H.S.) was credited with the win with two innings of work after Kyle Corwin (Rockaway Beach, Ore./Neah-Kah-Nie H.S.) started the first three stanzas. Smith struck out one while allowing two hits. Steven Taft (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) recorded the save by finishing the final two innings and allowing one hit.

Concordia returns to action on Monday when it hosts British Columbia at The Yard. Opening pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
