Cavs, Thunderbirds Combine for 34 Hits in 15-10 UBC Win
PORTLAND, Ore. – Concordia University outhit British Columbia 18-to-16 but dropped a make-up game played at The Yard by a 15-10 score on Monday.
With the result, UBC improved to 22-18 on the season while CU dropped to 13-21.
The Thunderbirds surged for all 15 of their runs in the first four innings after batting around in three of the first four stanzas. After four runs in the first, UBC sent two runners home in the second, three in the third and six in the fourth to take a commanding 15-4 lead. UBC benefited from five errors placed on the Cavalier defense.
Four hits and an error gave the Cavaliers three runs in the third to pull to a 6-4 deficit before the Thunderbird six-spot.
Matt Chester (Winnipeg, MB) cracked a three-run home run in the first and Fletcher Vynne (Friday Harbor, Wash.) cranked a two-run homer in the second.
Kyle Corwin (Rockaway Beach, Ore./Neah-Kah-Nie H.S.), Davin Muramoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kalani H.S.) and Brett Hawley (Bellevue, Wash./Newport H.S.) combined to shut down the UBC attack the final four innings, allowing just two hits during the span. Meanwhile, the CU batters recorded two runs in three more innings to cut into the UBC advantage.
Mark Hardy (Campbell River, B.C.) achieved the win with five innings of work for UBC, allowing 10 hits and six runs. Ben Rue (Silverton, Ore./Silverton H.S.) took the loss for the Cavs, lasting 1 2/3 innings and allowing seven hits and six runs, only two of which were earned.
Ben Torrie (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Vynne and Jon Syrnyk Langley, B.C.) all recorded three-hit games for UBC. Craig Leebosh (Montreal, Quebec), the courtesy runner for Torrie, the Thunderbird catcher, scored four times in zero at bats.
Roberto Reyes (Monterrey, Mexico), Derek Shigano (Pearl City, Hawaii/Roosevelt H.S.) and Jon Houts (Ramona, Calif.), who entered for an injured Casey McLeod (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam H.S.) in the second, notched three hits each for the Cavs. Houts also tallied three runs and two RBI’s. Brad Himes led CU with three RBI’s.
Concordia returns to action when it hosts the Owls of Oregon Tech for a three-game series beginning on April 25.
