VANCOUVER, B.C. – After suffering four defeats at home against the University of British Columbia earlier in the season, the Concordia Cavaliers powered their way to a pair of two-run wins at UBC on Sunday.

In an 11-9 win in a four hour and thirty minute affair in the opener, Concordia held on for a 7-5 victory in a relatively quick two hour and forty-five minute contest in the nightcap.

With the results from the often delayed games due to rain at Nat Bailey Stadium, Concordia improved to 10-14 on the season while UBC dropped to 16-15.

The Cavs jumped out to a 10-0 lead after scoring in each of the first five innings before the Thunderbirds struck for six in the bottom of the fifth.

UBC generated three more runs in the sixth to make it a 10-9 battle, but a CU insurance run in the seventh would help the Cavs hold on for the win.

Concordia belted 16 hits in the contest with Brad Himes leading the way after going 3-of-5 at the plate. Centerfielder Roberto Reyes collected three runs and two RBI’s after a 2-of-4 line.

Ben Rue recorded the win after firing for 4 1/3 innings, giving up five hits while striking out four. Brett Hawley finished the final two innings for the save, allowing one hit, one run and striking out a single UBC Batter.

After a solo run in the first inning in the nightcap for the Cavs, UBC responded with two in the home half of the stanza for their first lead of the day.

Concordia cut the deficit to one with a solo run in the fifth before plating three runners in the sixth for a 5-3 advantage. Both teams would generate single runs on two occasions for the 7-5 finale.

Reyes once again boosted the Cavalier attack with three runs scored after two hits in three charged at-bats. Ryan Sussenguth and Shawn Turner each tallied two RBI’s in the win.

Ross Conway pitched seven strong innings to grab the win. Conway scattered seven hits and allowed three runs while striking out two. Hawley took the mound for the final five outs for his second save of the day.

Game two finished just after 8:00 p.m., eight hours after the 12:00 p.m. scheduled start time of game one. The two sides will be back at it on Monday, with the first game of a doubleheader scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Nat Bailey Stadium.
