Oregon Tech Sweeps DH from Simpson
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- Game one saw Tech hang on to a 10 run lead, winning 11-6 and a bases loaded double in the seventh of game two gave the Owls a non-league doubleheader sweep over Simpson University tonight at Kiger Stadium. With the wins, the Oregon Tech baseball team improved their overall mark to 14-20 on the season.
Simpson would put the first run on the board in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Tech would load the bases in the second inning, on three consecutive walks, when a Frank Drake double cleared the bases to put the Owls up 3-1. Drake would then help the Owls erupt for five more runs in the third inning, this time on a 3-run homerun, his sixth RBI of the game, as the Owls were up 8-1. Tech would tack on a single run in the fourth and two more in the eighth, jumping out to an 11-1 lead. Simpson made it interesting in the ninth plating five runs, but it was not enough, as Tech would take the first game 11-6.
Bryan Barrington was 3-4 at the plate with three doubles and one RBI. Lee Eklund was 2-3 with a double and triple and two RBI while Frank Drake finished with six RBI on a double and a homerun. Pitcher Shea Bedortha scattered five hits, improving to 2-1 on the mound for the Owls.
Game two saw Simpson pitcher Ed Davila cruising, giving up only two hits and holding on to a 4-1 lead, hand-cuffing the Owls all the way into the seventh inning. Lee Eklund then started a Tech rally, leading off the bottom of the seventh with a double and scoring on a Sean Teaters double down the right field line that cut the lead in half at 4-2. Bret Prock drew a two out walk putting runners on first and second, which sent in a relief pitcher for Davila. Cory Spires was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases and Trent Smith walked, closing the gap to 4-3. Ryson Mauricio then drove a 1-2 pitch into the right field gap, plating Tech’s final two runs and going on to win the nightcap 5-4.
Releif pitcher Chad Trevisan picked up the win for the Owls, his first of the year, moving to 1-1. Frank Drake, Sean Teaters and Trent Smith all had an RBI in the nightcap, while Mauricio drove in two runs on his walk-off double in the seventh.
The Owls will next host College of Idaho on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. Both CCC doubleheaders will be played at Kiger Stadium.
