Corban's Williams Announces Pair of Signings for '08-09
SALEM, Ore. – Tenth-year head coach Terry Williams announced Thursday the signing of a trio of incoming players for next season that include high school seniors Kira Lyons (Salem, Ore.) and Joani Reimer (Ferndale, Wash.).
Coach Williams commented about the duo of incoming freshman by saying, "I am very excited about both of these very good high school players joining the college ranks here at Corban College, making the Warriors a very competitive team right away as freshmen."
Lyon, a senior at nearby West Salem High School, helped lead the Titans to 12-10 record this past season and a spot in the opening round of the OSAA Class 6A state playoffs. Lyons averaged 12.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game during her final season at West Salem. The 5-foot-6 wing player was named as a member of the 1st team all-league and 1st team all-region, while shooting 72.9% from the free throw line.
"Kira is a hard-nosed competitor that can take the ball to the hoop hard from the guard position," said Williams. "She also has pull up capabilities and can shoot the three, making her difficult to defend. Kira also plays tough defense and should be an asset to our overall team defensive strategies."
Reimer, a senior at Lynden Christian High School, helped lead the Lyncs to an undefeated 29-0 season and a state title at the 1A level thanks to a 46-35 victory over Columbia High School. The 6-foot-2 post player averaged 10.2 points, a team-high 7.2 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks per game, while helping lead Lyndon Christian to a No. 7 ranking in the state according to MaxPreps.com. Reimer was named to the All-Northwest Conference 2nd team, while also registering the highest field goal percentage (57.5%) in the Northwest Conference.
"Joani has a lot of athletic possibilities as a post player," said Williams. "She shoots the ball well from the outside and inside making her a double threat. As Joani learns more skills for the college game, she should be a real handful for our opponents."
The aforementioned duo joins fellow incoming freshman Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) and Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) as part of the Class of 2012. Steigleman earned 2nd team all-state honors following her senior season at Sheldon High School, while Buhler was named all-state honorable mention after helping lead Clackamas High School to Round 2 of the OSAA Class 6A state tournament.
The quartet of incoming recruits join six players from last season's roster, as Corban tips off the 2008-09 season on Thursday, November 15th, as part of the Simpson Tournament in Redding, California.
