CU's Austin Jumps 51 Places in Third Round of NAIA Championships
PLYMOUTH, Ind. - Concordia’s Tyler Austin carded a 2-under 70 in the third round of play at the 2008 NAIA men’s golf national championships held at the Indiana National Golf Club.
Austin moved up 51 spots to finish the day tied for 50th place out of 144 individuals. Austin opened the tournament in 109th place after the first round of play and moved up to a tie for 101st with his second round before jumping ahead of nearly one-third of the field with his third-round 70.
Despite the performance, Austin could not avoid the cut list as the tournament field was thinned to the top 17 teams and 40 individuals after the completion of the third round. Austin tied for the third lowest score among the cut golfers.
Nick Zappin (70-69-69—208), competing for Johnson and Wales, fired his second consecutive round of 69 to take a two-stroke gap over Point Loma’s Sam Cyr (69-70-71—210).
British Columbia teammates Cory Renfrew (71-72-70—213) and Blake Rowe-Sleeman (77-64-72—213) enter the final round tied for third place.
UBC (294-281-289—864) continued to hold the team lead with a third-round score of 289 for a three-stroke advantage over Johnson and Wales (284-295-288—867). Oklahoma City finished the third round with a single-stroke lead over Oklahoma Christian (287-307-282—876) for third place.
The men’s golf championship concluded on May 16 with the fourth and final round.
