PORTLAND, Ore.—Sean Gaines of Portland, Ore., and Drew Preuninger of Camas, Wash., have signed to continue their education and play basketball at Concordia University, Cavalier men’s basketball coach Brad Barbarick announced today.

Gaines, a 6-foot-5 post/wing from Madison High School in Portland, will join Drew Preuninger, a 6-foot combo guard from Camas High School and fellow freshman recruit Gage Aker from Portland's Wilson High School who signed with the Cavaliers in February as part of the team’s 2008-09 recruiting class.

Gaines led his Madison Senators to a 17-8 record and a second-place finish in the Portland Interscholastic League 5A division (9-4) this past season. Gaines averaged 18.3 points and 11.1 rebounds per game and was named co-MVP of the PIL. Gaines earned honorable mention all-state honors after leading the Senators to the second round of the Oregon 5A state tournament.

As a junior, Gaines averaged 16.4 points per game and earned all-PIL honors. Gaines has been selected to play in the Oregon High School Coaches Association All-Star Series in late June as well as the Joyce Washington Portland Metro area all-star game on May 31 at the center for Self-Enhancement (SEI). Gaines was rated as one of the top forward prospects in the Pacific Northwest by NorthwestHoops.com.

“Sean is an excellent fit for our program, he brings strong low-post skills and a tremendous ability to pursue the ball,” Barbarick said. “He played for a very good coach at Madison High School in Chuck Matthews so he understands how to play hard and compete. I know that Sean's family and friends are excited to see him at CU. He has the desire and skill set to have a very successful career at Concordia.”

Gaines will graduate with a 3.1 grade point average and has not yet declared a major at CU.

Preuninger will arrive at Concordia after an outstanding prep career at Camas High School. Preuninger was a four-year varsity starter and is the Papermakers all-time career leader in assists (390) and in games played (88). Preuninger earned all-Greater St. Helens League honors three consecutive seasons including a first-team selection as a senior. Preuninger averaged 14.3 points and six assists per game during the 2008-09 season. In addition to his all-league honors, Preuninger was named to the Columbian Newspaper all-region team and was selected to play in the 2008 Les Schwab Roundball Shootout. Preuninger captured the three-point competition that was part of the Les Schwab Roundball Shootout by making 46 three-point shots in two minutes.

An outstanding student, Preuninger earned Greater St. Helens League all-academic honors as a junior and senior while maintaining a 3.5 grade point average.

"Drew is a very talented combo guard. He has the tenacity, quickness and intelligence to play the point and he shoots it well enough to play the two,” Barbarick said. “He is also an excellent defender and will bring toughness to our backcourt. Drew will be one of our ‘glue guys’ as he brings tremendous versatility to our team.”
