LEWISTON, Idaho (May 4, 2008)--For the first time this season, Lewis-Clark State was shutout. Oregon Tech took game one 1-0 in a scheduled seven-inning game, but lost 7-3 in game two in the Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho.
The Owls held LC to only three hits, a season-low for the Warriors and lowest since 2006, in the first game, while in the second game the Owls surrendered 15 hits in the 7-3 defeat.
The win for Tech snapped a 17 game win streak for the No. 2 ranked Idaho team, as the Oregon Tech baseball team concluded their season 22-30. This is only the Owls third 20+ win season in school history.
In the first game, Oregon Tech junior Carlos Ruvalcaba, did what no other pitcher has been able to do against the Warrior lineup, as he went seven innings, stranded three hits, and gave up no runs. Ruvalcaba, had zero strikeouts, but did have good defense behind him as the Hustlin’ Owls finished the game errorless.
The only run of the game was scored in the top of the third when Oregon Tech’s Trenton Smith started the inning off with a single to right field. Frank Drake then followed with a single down the right field line to give the Hustlin’ Owls runners at first and second, and Ryson Mauricia smacked a double, one of his three hits in the game, to score the only, and game winning run.
In the second game, the Warriors made up for their first game lack of production by recording a hit in every inning at the plate. Despite hits in every inning, the Warriors scored in only two innings—three in the first, and four in the sixth. Taylor Skinner produced Oregon Tech’s only runs as he hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh, but not enough for the Owls, falling by the final of 7-3.
With five hits in today’s doubleheader, Tech’s Ryson Mauricio set an all-time single season hits record for Oregon Tech with 69 on the season. Trent Smith, Frank Drake and Bryan Barrington each went for two hits on the day, with Taylor Skinner driving in three runs on his seventh inning homerun in game two. Carlos Ruvalcaba improved his record to 3-1 on the mound for the Owls.
