Simon Fraser Escapes Concordia for Region I Win
KLAMATH FALLS, Oregon (May 8, 2008)—Concordia University came up with 17 base hits against Simon Fraser pitchers, but could not overcome a six run 1st inning by the Clan, losing 10-7 and becoming the first team eliminated in Region I play today in Klamath Falls.
Down 6-1 after one inning, the Cavs tacked on three runs in the 2nd inning, closing the gap to 6-4. Concordia cut the Simon Fraser lead to only one run, plating three runs in the fifth 8-7, but SFU then added two insurance runs in the bottom of the 5th, extending the lead to10-7. CU was unable to push anymore runs across for the remainder of the game, losing by the same score.
The Cavs Denise Benedict finished the game 4-4 at the plate with an RBI followed by a 3-5 effort from Tina Garcia, including four RBI. Starting pitcher Janelle Cristifaro was the losing pitcher, ending the season 4-4. Danielle Pulfrey finished the final 5.2 innings striking out eight SFU batters and walking two.
After connecting for only four hits in game one, the SFU bats came alive for 12 hits in game three, led by a 4-4 effort by Jessie Harris. Chrissy Caviglia came up with three hits followed by Heather Reiss with two. Harris, Caviglia, Christie Barr and Carly Moir each drove in two runs for the Clan, while pitcher Jennifer Van Egdom was credited with the win (2-1) and Haley Cicchetti picked up her first save of the season.
Simon Fraser will play the loser of the Oregon Tech and College of Idaho game in an elimination game, Friday at 11:00 a.m.
