GRESHAM, Ore.—Eight returning champions successfully defended their titles while three new meet records were established to highlight second-day action at the Cascade Collegiate Conference track and field championships held at Mt. Hood Community College’s Earl Klopstein Stadium.
Oregon Tech’s Jguwon Hogges returned to claim two of his three individual titles from a year ago with event wins in the 100 and the 400. In back-to-back events on the track, Hogges cracked the men’s second record of the day with an NAIA provisional time of 48.68 that nipped the conference championship record by .01. Trevor Palmer of Southern Oregon previously held the record with a 48.69 set in 2005.
Hogges next took to 100-meter dash where he crossed the line in 11.07 for his second victory of the day. Hogges held off Eastern Oregon’s Nathan Schmidt, who finished in 11.24 for runner-up honors, for the short sprint crown.
Concordia provided the final two returning champions on the men’s side as Leon Carl led a 1-2 Cavalier finish with a 51-11 3/4 toss in the shot put, defeating teammate Nik Kay (50-8) by more than a foot.
CU’s Greg Schultz took top honors in the hammer throw for the third consecutive year by launching a 191-10. Kay once again settled for silver with a 179-9 mark.
Eastern Oregon grabbed three individual titles with Kirk Miller taking the win in the long jump with a 22-4 1/2, Lucas Ohmes taking the 110-meter hurdle race with a 15.43 and Troy Blackburn fending off teammate Cameron Starner for the win in the steeplechase with a time of 9:27.89. College of Idaho’s Tyler Hopper held off EOU’s Doug Benson 3:52.19 to 3:53.13 for the win in the 1,500. Hopper’s time took the second meet record away from former SOU standout Palmer with the Raider setting the mark of 3:52.50 during the 2005 season.
On the women’s side, EOU’s Marcella Bosch repeated in the 1,500 with an NAIA automatic qualifying time of 4:40.84, narrowly missing the meet record of 4:40.61. The College of Idaho scored 23 points in the event with five racers in the top eight placers.
Doubling the distance and adding barriers, EOU’s Stephanie Windle conquered the steeplechase field with the lone female meet record of the day. With a 11:26.37, Windle paced her way to a 16-second spread over runner-up Emily Uhlig of Evergreen State to upend the previous record of 11:28.00 by just more than a second. EOU also received an event win the field as Cayla Weissert outlasted the vaulters with an 11-1 3/4 clearance. CU’s Kaycee Gillespie and SOU’s Jamie Wells finished the competition tied for second place after each recorded a 10-8 in the identical number of total attempts.
Also recording repeat efforts were the Concordia pair of Cortney Bannister and Katherine Tripp. Bannister, already automatically qualified in the 400 hurdles, took home the high hurdle title with a 14.82 to beat a pair of Owls to the line with OIT’s Nikki Smith placing second at 15.12 and Michelle Klaja crossing in third at 15.59.
Tripp tackled the shot put field for the second consecutive year, this time with a 43-4 1/2 toss. Concordia also claimed individual titles in the 100, 400 and hammer throw. Stephanie Persaud strided ahead an OIT duo of Amy Sticka and Lashell Larmen with a 12.52 for the sprint title while Mariana Toscano edged Bannister at the line, 58.47 to 58.50, in the 400.
Annie Hess, the runner-up in the shot, snared an event win with a provisional distance in the hammer after unleashing the orb 152-1. Including a win in the 400 relay with an NAIA auto time of 48.73, Concordia won six of the 11 women's events on Friday. Eastern Oregon earned three titles and Oregon Tech two.
OIT’s Amy Sticka landed 17-10 3/4 in the long jump for a two-inch win over CU’s Lakeesha Cadogan while fellow Owl Michelle Klaja tallied 4,053 points in the heptathlon, for a near 300-point gap over second-place Emily McCutchan (3,766) of College of Idaho.
Through 12 events, six women have posted NAIA automatic qualifiers and six more have met the provisional barrier. Through 11 events, nine men have met the auto mark and seven more have reached the provisional.
As for the team race, Concordia holds slim leads over Eastern Oregon on both sides. The CU women accumulated 119 points for a 13.5-point edge over the Mountaineers while the men cling to a one-point advantage over EOU, 124 to 123.
