SALEM, Ore. – The Warrior Athletic Association hosted the 13th annual Warrior Golf Classic on Monday at Creekside Golf Club that included outstanding golf, good weather, and a great day overall raising money for the Warrior athletic department.

68 enthusiastic golfers enjoyed the best tournament in the 13-year history of the event, as the shot-gun start opened with a few passing showers before the dark clouds disappeared bringing bright, sunny weather for the remainder of the afternoon.

"This is the best tournament that I played in," commented one anonymous golfer. "I enjoy coming to this event and playing in such a well-run tournament."

The day began with the Red Lion Inn Chipping & Putting contest in which a combined 31 people paid for an opportunity to win a one night stay at the Red Lion Inn in Salem and $50 gift certificate to Willamette Valley Grill.

In the putting contest, both Nate Webb and Hans Reimer holed their putts to force a championship putt-off. In the putt-off, Webb rolled his ball to 35.5 inches, beating Reimer by a mere three-quarters-of-an-inch. Reimer got his revenge in the chipping contest, lofting his ball to 17.5 inches away from the cup to beat Webb by two inches.

Following the Red Lion putting and chipping contest, women's basketball coach Terry Williams opened the festivities in prayer before Corban's Director of Athletics John Nelson sent everyone off to begin the day's golf.

Once the final putt dropped, the overall winners with a combined team score of 18-under 54 were Nelson Zarfas, Jim Green, Jeff Dunn, and Gary Williamson.

At the evening's award dinner, Nelson reminded the gathering of Corban Athletics' unique mission to equip its student-athletes to make a difference through their talents for Christ. Nelson thanked everyone for participating in the tournament and helping to support Warrior athletics.

"Although our numbers were down this year, the pride of the Athletic Department and WAA made the quality of this year’s Golf Classic one of the best," said Nelson. "The golf was "interesting" and the fun at the evening awards dinner was a great cap to the day. I thank all the golfers and the great numbers of volunteers that made the event a success."

The dinner concluded with the awarding of the Bandon Dunes Grand Prize package. The package included a gift certificate at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort along with gift certificates to Old Town Pizza & Pasta in Bandon. This year's winner was Tim Holstein.

Overall, Warrior Athletics raised approximately $18,000, which will benefit various WAA program enhancement projects during the 2008-09 year as well as helping numerous Warrior teams with non-budget items.

The 2009 Warrior Golf Classic is scheduled for Monday, June 8th, at Creekside Golf Club.
