PORTLAND, Ore. – Te Awhina Aranui of the Cascade College women’s basketball team has been voted the 2007-08 Cascade Collegiate Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Tuesday.

Aranui, a senior from Rotorua, New Zealand, is majoring in English and is expected to earn her degree this fall. She was a CCC and NAIA Scholar-Athlete this past season, and holds school records for rebounds in a game and career.

This past season, she averaged a double/double in points and rebounds, scoring an average of 14.2 points and pulling down an average of 12.5 rebounds per game. Her rebounding average ranked third nationally. Off the court, she was a member of the Cascade College Summit Society, which is an invitation-only club for students who have distinguished themselves academically. She also is a member of Alpha Chi, a national honor society for students with high academic standing.

"It was a real pleasure to coach Te Awhina,” said Matt Murphy, Cascade College’s women’s basketball coach and interim athletic director. “She showed diligence and discipline on the court and in the classroom. Te has set a great example for her teammates and is a role model for the type of student-athlete that we look to bring to Cascade College."
