SOU's Lindsey Stone Named CCC's Female 'Champion of Character'
PORTLAND, Ore. – Lindsey Stone of Southern Oregon University’s volleyball team has been voted the 2007-08 recipient of the Cascade Collegiate Conference’s inaugural Female Champion of Character Award, the league office announced Wednesday.
The Champion of Character Award, symbolic of the NAIA’s signature national program designed to promote character development in youth and change the culture of sport, will be given annually to the male and female student-athletes in the CCC who best exemplify the core tenets of respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
On the court, Stone helped lead SOU’s volleyball team to a share of the CCC’s regular season title and a berth in the NAIA Region I Championships this past fall. The CCC’s Player of the Year, she went on to earn second team All-America honors. Off the court, the French/nursing major from Ashland has been involved in extensive volunteer work, including assisting in an orphanage in Mexico, YMCA outreach programs, SOU’s REACT peer education program, and summer youth camps for disadvantaged children.
Said Dennis Francois, SOU’s director of athletics: “Lindsey epitomizes the core values of Champions of Character and is a wonderful representative of our university and the community of Ashland."
SOU head volleyball coach Josh Rohlfing, who coached Lindsey at Ashland High School where it won a state title in 2005, added, "She is an ardent community leader and significant contributor to the university. Lindsey is consistent in her demeanor and character, and is an individual with an effervescent, unrelenting smile and attitude. She is the first to pick up an opponent or teammate with a kind word or action and constantly gives back to others in meaningful ways.”
