PORTLAND, Ore.—Alex Tiefenthaler a transfer from Portland State University and Jeff Sego of Clackamas Community College, have signed to continue their education and play basketball at Concordia University, Cavalier men’s basketball coach Brad Barbarick announced today.

Tiefenthaler, a 6-foot-9 post/forward will join the Cavalier squad after spending the 2007-08 season at NCAA Division I Portland State. Prior to his arrival at PSU, Tiefenthaler, played one season at the University of Portland. Tiefenthaler will have two years of eligibility remaining and will provide needed size on the Cavalier frontline.

Tiefenthaler was part of the 2007-08 Portland State team that went 23-10 and won the Big Sky Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament. Tiefenthaler was named Player of the Game in Portland State’s first-round NCAA tournament loss to the University of Kansas after scoring 10 points against the eventual national champion Jayhawks.

During his one season at the University of Portland Tiefenthaler started five games and notched a career high 15 points and nine rebounds versus the University of San Diego.

Tiefenthaler prepped at Bethel High School in Spanaway, Wash., and helped lead the Braves to the 2005 Washington 4A state championship. Tiefenthaler averaged 14.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game his senior season. He was named first-team all-state and earned all-South Puget Sound League Honors as a junior and senior. Tiefenthaler will be reunited at CU with his former Bethel High School teammate Desmond Meray. Meray returns for his senior season as the Cavalier’s leading scorer.

“We are thrilled to have a player of Alex’s talent join us,” Barbarick said. “Alex will bring an immediate presence to our team with his skills and size. He will also bring versatility to our team as he can play inside and outside and is a tremendous shooter. I look forward to the next two years of having Alex as part of our basketball family he has the chance to have a major impact as a student-athlete at Concordia.”

Jeff Sego a 6-foot point guard will join the Cavaliers after a highly successful career at Clackamas Community College. Sego helped lead the Cougars to a 47-18 record, including a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) championship in 2006-07, in his two seasons as a Cougar.

Clackamas set a school record for most wins in a season when they finished 29-4 (14-0 in Southern Region play) during their NWACC championship run. Sego was the Cougars starting point guard in 2007-08 and averaged 4.5 assists, 8.8 points and 1.1 steals per game. Sego prepped at Black Hills High School in Olympia, Wash., where he earned all-league honors as a senior.

“Jeff is a true point guard that knows how to run a team. He is a winner and comes from a Clackamas Community College program coached by Clif Wegner that has been one of the best junior college programs on the West Coast the last several years,” Barbarick said. “Jeff brings a high grade point average and strong leadership skills and he will be a very good player in our system.”
