PORTLAND, Ore.--Through Bike First!, the Portland, Oregon, affiliate of "Lose the Training Wheels", over 60 children with special needs from across the region successfully learned to ride a bike over the past two weeks while practicing on the campus of Concordia University.

Bike First! has conducted summer camps in Portland since 2006. “Lose the Training Wheels” was developed for children with cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome and other disabilities who, amazingly, can be up and riding on a two-wheeler within a week.

CU hosted two one-week sessions with Thursday, July 3, marking the final day of lessons in the second bike clinic. Each clinic featured 32 children who came to learn the joy of cycling.

“The Bike First! program gives kids confidence and specific bicycle skills. It is a thrill to see a person ride a bike for the first time in their life!” Concordia Athletics Director Dr. Joel Schuldheisz said. “The ability to ride a bike opens up a whole new world of movement and freedom. What an awesome experience for Concordia to host this nationally recognized program.”

CU alumnus and adjunct professor, Ann Donaca-Sullivan, is the director of the Portland camp.
