Jackie Pronovost scored a goal and anchored the Cavalier defense to a shutout over Embry-Riddle on Wednesday.
CU Opens Season with Shutout of Embry-Riddle
BEAVERTON, Ore.— With consecutive goals from the Pronovost sisters and a pair of successful shots by Shea Miller, the fifth-ranked Concordia University women’s soccer team posted a 5-0 win over visiting Embry-Riddle Aeronautical.
The contest represented the season opener for both teams and the first competition for the Cavaliers at the Tualatin Hills Athletic Center, the site for all of the team’s home games this season due to construction on the Concordia campus.
“This was a great opening win for the club,” 12th-year head coach Grant Landy said. “Our players were patient with the ball and very smart with their attack.”
The Cavs got on the scoreboard in the 27th minute with a strike from senior forward Justine Pronovost (Milwaukie, Ore.) after receiving the ball from teammate Kaitlyn Tebbs (Bend, Ore.).
In the second half, CU efficient offense with four goals on seven shots, the first of which came off the boot of senior defender Jackie Pronovost (Milwaukie, Ore.). After settling the ball, Pronovost connected with a 35-yard kick that sailed over Eagle goalkeeper Chelsea Heck in the 70th minute.
Miller (Azalea, Ore.), a senior forward, scored the team’s next two goals in a three-minute span with the first coming via point-blank position following a scramble in front of the net.
Jessica Ramback, the Cascade Collegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2007, netted the final goal of the day with an eight-yard shot from that skipped by the keeper.
Embry-Riddle was held to a single shot in the 90 minutes of play with Samantha Welch breaking away on the right side. Unleashing a 15-yard blast in the 67th minute, Welch’s shot was scooped up by a diving Georgie Christensen, who recorded her first save in a Cavalier uniform on the play.
Concordia returns to action on Monday, August 25 when it faces No. 13 Westmont College (Calif.). Kickoff is set for noon at the Tualatin Hills Athletic Center.
