Fryer Powers Concordia Past NU in L-C Finale
LEWISTON, Idaho
—Behind a 17-kill effort from senior hitter Lindsey Fryer, the Concordia volleyball team cruised to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16) victory over Northwest University at the Holiday Inn Express Tournament held at the Lewis-Clark State College Activity Center on Saturday.
Erika Doremus joined Fryer in double digits with a season-high10 kills. Freshman setter Skyler Kakaka led the floor with 33 assists and junior libero Kim Lindow notched a match-high 19 digs.
“The biggest thing is that we were focused on taking care of the ball and working hard without the ball to get into the position to make plays,” Concordia head coach Christopher Duenow said.
With Fryer connecting on 37 percent of her attacks, the Cavaliers concluded the match hitting nearly 30 percent as a team while holding the Eagles to 13.8 percent.
Both freshmen, Clair Thiel added eight kills and Eric Ford tallied seven digs to boost the Concordia cause. Along with her 33 assists, Kamaka filled the stat sheet with 14 digs and six aces.
“I was really impressed how the young girls came out this weekend,” Fryer said. “You don’t really know what to expect the first time out but they really stepped up and did their job.”
Alisha Larion led the Eagles with 11 kills while teammate Andrea Cotton reached for 11 digs.
The two teams will face each other two more times throughout the regular season with the first match at Concordia in a Cascade Collegiate Conference affair on Sept. 5.
“We just need to focus on us right now,” Duenow said. “Now we have to evaluate what we need to do to be successful the next time we see them because you should never expect to see the same team.”
