Corban's Bowman & Walter Score Twice Each in Win Over Argos
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Freshman Brittany Bowman (Shelton, Wash.) scored two goals and handed out an assist to go along with junior Marissa Walter's (Elk Grove, Calif.) two-goal performance, as Corban's women's soccer team defeated the University of Great Falls, 6-0, Thursday at Warrior Field.
After watching a scoreless first 45 minutes, Corban began the onslaught when freshman Amanda Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) gathered the ball in the penalty box and unleashed a shot from 18 yards out for the game's first goal in the 47th minute. Mendenhall's first collegiate goal turned out to be the game-winner, as Corban tallied five more goals over a span of 40 minutes.
Less than two minutes after Mendenhall's goal, Walter got into the act in the 50th minute when she took a pass down the near sideline from fellow junior Kacie Emerick (Bellingham, Wash.). After taking two dribbles, Walter unloaded a shot from just outside the penalty area that floated up and over the outstretched arm of Great Falls' keeper and into the left side of the net.
Just over 15 minutes later, Walter notched her second goal of the game when she took a one-two pass from Emerick and freshman Malia Grajeda (University Place, Wash.) in the 65th minute. Following a pair of touch passes with the final one coming off the foot of Grajeda that led beyond the defense and towards the goal, Walter blasted a shot from just outside the goalie box into the upper right corner for her second goal of the season.
Not wanting to be outdone, Bowman collected the first of her two goals on the afternoon in the 78th minute when she collected a pass from Mendenhall following a scrum in front of the Lady Argos' net. Following the confusion, Bowman collected the ball and poked a shot that eluded Great Falls' keeper for her first collegiate goal.
Less than two minutes later, Bowman notched her second goal of the afternoon when she deposited a deflection into the back of the net in the 80th minute. Mendenhall began the action with a run down the far sideline before she lofted a crossing pass toward the Lady Argos' net. Without hesitation, Great Falls' keeper jumped off her line in an attempt to punch the ball away. Unfortunately for the Lady Argos' net-minder, the attempted save ended up at the feet of Bowman who quickly sent the ball into the back of the net for the Warriors' fifth goal of the contest.
Capping off the scoring, freshman Natalie Haddix (Santa Rosa, Calif.) took a through pass from Bowman and notched her first collegiate goal in the 86th minute. Bowman began the play with a run down the near sideline before cutting back towards the goal in an attempt to draw the defense. Within striking distance, Bowman opted to flick a pass up over the oncoming defense onto an awaiting Haddix, who promptly deposited the ball into the back of the net for the game's final tally.
Senior goalkeeper Karyn Allen (Merlin, Ore.) played all 90 minutes between the pipes for Corban en route to picking up her first shutout of the season, as she needed to make only one save on the afternoon. Meanwhile, Great Falls' Sam Davies recorded a game-high seven saves but could not stop the Warriors' second half onslaught.
With the win, Corban moves to 1-1-0 on the season while Great Falls opens its '08 campaign at 0-1-0. The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, August 30th, when they travel west for a 3:00 p.m. contest against NCAA Division II member Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
