Cascade Opens Season With Tough Loss
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Thunderbird women's soccer season opener concluded with a bizarre goal in the first overtime period as Cascade fell to visiting Great Falls 1-0 today at Williams and Smith Field.
Six and a half minutes into the extra period, a foul was whistled at midfield. As the teams set up for the ensuing free kick from Cascade, the referee called the offending players close for a warning. Immediately afterwards, the official called possesion the other way. The Argonauts quicly placed the ball and found a streaking Jessica Selmer for who beat T-Bird keeper Shannon Baker for the breakaway goal.
"Just a strange way to get beat," said coach Justin Bigelow. "Both teams expected that last foul to go against Great Falls, but it didn't, and they capitalized quickly. We possessed the ball well at times and had several chances to score, so I'm encouraged."
Shots for the game were nearly even, with UGF holding a 9-8 edge. Cascade had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-3. Shannon Baker made 6 saves in her collegiate debut for Cascade, while UGF's Sam Davies turned away 5 shots.
The T-Birds will head across town to Lewis & Clark College on Sept. 3rd for their next game.
