CCC Players of Week Named for Aug. 25-31
The following Cascade Collegiate Conference student-athletes were recognized as conference Players of the Week in their respective sports for the period Aug. 25-31.
Men’s Soccer
Offensive – College of Idaho midfielder Antonio Bautista (Sr., Homedale, Idaho) was honored as the CCC’s Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in a pair of matches last week. Bautista had a pair of assists in a 4-3 loss to NCAA Division II foe Northwest Nazarene, then had the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 home victory over University of Great Falls. Other nominees: Tyler Camp (Vancouver, Wash.) of Concordia; Obed Kouassi (Tukwila, Wash.) of Evergreen; Tyler Grove (North Marion, Ore.) of Corban.
Defensive – Goalkeeper Garrett Staples (Sr., Eugene, Ore.) of Concordia was named the CCC’s Defensive Player of the Week after allowing just one goal and recording seven saves as Concordia captured the Arno Zoske Classic title at Olympia, Wash. Staples had a pair of saves in a 1-0 victory over fifth-ranked Simon Fraser on Saturday before turning back five shots and allowing just one goal in a 2-1 win over University of British Columbia on Sunday. Other nominees: Matt Stalnik (Kasilof, Alaska) of Evergreen; Daniel Steffen (Oregon City, Ore.) of Corban.
Women’s Soccer
Offensive – Northwest Christian’s Karli Vath (Fr., South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) was named the CCC’s Offensive Player of the Week after recording only the second hat trick in NCU history. Vath had three goals and two assists in an 8-1 victory over Mills. Other nominees: Shea Miller (Azalea, Ore.) of Concordia; Emily Dickerson (Nampa, Idaho) of College of Idaho; Chelsie O’Neill (Phoenix, Ore.) of Southern Oregon; Kate Green (Covington, Wash.) of Evergreen; Brittany Bowman (Shelton, Wash.) of Corban.
Defensive – Goalkeeper Sadie Hughes (Jr., Courtenay, B.C.) of College of Idaho was named the CCC’s Defensive Player of the Week. In three matches last week, Hughes helped the Yotes to a 2-1 record, including an 8-1 win over Mills and a 1-0 shutout victory over Holy Names. Hughes had seven saves and allowed three goals in 228 minutes. Other nominees: Jessica Kuehlwien (Oregon City, Ore.) of Southern Oregon; Sonya Daisley-Harr (Maple Valley, Wash.) of Evergreen; Karyn Allen (Merlin, Ore.) of Oregon Tech.
Volleyball
Player – College of Idaho’s Sarah Buhler (Jr., Middleton, Idaho) was named the CCC’s Player of the Week. The middle blocker was named to the all-tourney team at the Seaside (Calif.) Invitational after averaging 3.38 kills in four matches. She had a career-high 21 kills vs. 10th-ranked Madonna. Other nominees: Lindsey Fryer (Bremerton, Wash.) of Concordia.
Libero – Concordia’s Kim Lindow (Jr., Gresham, Ore.) was named the CCC’s Libero of the Week. Lindow helped the Cavs to a runner-up finish at CU’s Fairfield Inn and Suites Tournament in Portland last week, averaging nearly four digs per set as CU posted a pair of sweeps and forced No. 16 Lewis-Clark State to a decisive fifth set. Other nominees: Maggie Rivers (Salem, Ore.) of Southern Oregon.
Setter – Concordia’s Skyler Kamaka (Fr., Kaneohe, Hawaii) was recognized as the CCC’s Setter of the Week. Kamaka was named to the all-tourney team at CU’s Fairfield Inn and Suites Tournament after guiding the Cavs to a runner-up finish. Kamaka led the floor in assists in all three matches, including a season-best 36 against No. 16 Lewis-Clark State. She also had 10 kills and five aces. Other nominees: Madie Machurek (Eagle, Idaho) of College of Idaho; Lindsey Stone (Ashland, Ore.) of Southern Oregon.
Cross Country
Male – Concordia’s Charles Cummings (Jr., Yakima, Wash.) was named the Cascade Collegiate Conference’s Male Runner of the Week after helping lead the Cavaliers to a third-place finish at the Western Oregon University Summer’s End Invitational Aug. 29. Cummings covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:24 to finish eighth overall and first among the Concordia contingent.
Female – Concordia’s Linsie Michels (So., Salem, Ore.) earned Cascade Collegiate Conference Female Runner of the Week honors after posting a seventh-place individual finish to lead all Cavaliers at the Western Oregon University Summer’s End Invitational. Michels, a former Oregon prep star who transferred from Concordia University in Irvine, Calif., clocked a time of 19:28 over the 5,000-meter course in her debut with the Cavaliers. Concordia finished third in the meet.
