Corban's Haddix Nets Hat-Trick in Victory Over Cyclones of Mills
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Freshman Natalie Haddix (Santa Rosa, Calif.) scored her first career hat trick to go along with fellow freshman Brittany Bowman's (Shelton, Wash.) two-goal performance, as Corban's women's soccer team defeated Mills College, 9-0, Friday afternoon on Warrior Field.
Having gone 273-plus minutes without scoring a goal, Corban wasted no time whatsoever when sophomore Erin Laughlin (Ephrata, Wash.) took a through ball from freshman Amanda Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) and scored the eventual game-winner in the second minute of play.
Just over ten minutes later, Bowman scored her team-leading third goal off an assist from sophomore Katie Hanson (Salem, Ore.). Hanson began the play with a through ball behind the Cyclone defense to a wide-open Bowman, who dribble past Mills' goalkeeper and netted her first of back-to-back goals.
Fifteen minutes later, Bowman teamed with junior Marissa Walter (Elk Grove, Calif.) on a similar pass from her previous goal. Walter's through ball got behind Mills' defense and allowed Bowman to notched her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The first half scoring ended when Mendenhall scored her first collegiate goal in the 44th minute, as freshman Rachel Cole (San Ramon, Calif.) and junior Kaitlyn McLaughlin (Bakersfield, Calif.) teamed up for a one-two assist. The goal-scoring play began when Cole directed a pass to McLaughlin, who attempted a shot on goal only to have the ball saved by Mills' keeper. Fortunately for the Warriors, the deflection came to the awaiting feet of Mendenhall as she redirected the ball into the back of the net for the Warriors' 4-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, freshman Malia Grajeda (University Place, Wash.) notched her first collegiate goal off an assist from Laughlin. The play began with a corner kick by Laughlin in the 57th minute that looked like it bent straight into the far left corner of the goal. Upon further review, it was shown that Grajeda got the final touch on the ball that she redirected into the corner for the game's fifth goal.
Just over fourteen minutes later, McLaughlin notched her first goal as a Warrior in the 71st minute when she dribbled the ball up the left sideline before crossing back towards the goal. McLaughlin's shot found the back of the net, as she beat Mills' keeper high to the left side.
Haddix then got into the scoring action as she notched three unanswered goals in the 77th, 85th, and 86th minute to tie Bowman for the team lead. The 5-foot-5 forward also notched the Warriors' first hat trick since former Warrior Sarah Muri scored a school-record five goals against Cascade on October 21, 2003.
Corban unleashed a season-high 50 shots, which is the second highest since the aforementioned Western Baptist-Cascade game when the Warriors registered a school-record 53 shots.
Senior goalkeeper Karyn Allen (Merlin, Ore.) and junior Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.) split time between the pipes for Corban, as each net-minder registered 45 minutes for the Warriors. Neither keeper needed to make a save, as Mills did not register a shot in the contest.
Meanwhile, Mills' goalie Erika Francies registered a game-high 19 saves despite allowing all nine Warrior goals.
With the win, Corban improves to 2-4-0 on the season while Mills drops to 0-3-0. The Warriors are back in action on Thursday, September 18th, when they host Northwest Christian University in the conference opener for both teams beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Warrior Field in the 3rd annual Soccer Under the Lights game.
