Cavaliers Blank Eagles in Battle of Top-25 Concordia's
BEAVERTON, Ore.–Facing its fourth top-25 team in the past three weeks, No. 5-ranked Concordia-Portland improved to 6-0-1 on the season after defeating No. 24 Concordia-Irvine 3-0 in non-conference women’s soccer action on Saturday.
The visiting California club dropped from the unbeaten ranks with the loss, falling to 4-1-0 on the year
The hosting Cavaliers limited the Eagles to just three shot attempts, none of which were put on goal. “I thought we had a good game plan from a defensive standpoint,” Concordia head coach Grant Landy said. “Our players have done a good job of sticking to what we talk about pregame. We received solid play all along the back line today.”
Justine Pronovost put the Cavaliers on the board in the 34th minute of action with a header from inside the box after receiving the ball from a long cross Jackie Pronovost. The Cavs would tack on two additional goals in the second period with Jessica Ramback breaking through in the 66th minute and Shea Miller connecting in the 76th minute.
Overall, the Cavs took 14 shots with six registering as on goal. “When you play against a good defensive team you are not going to get a ton of chances,” Landy said. “I have to be pleased with the team getting those three goals when we were limited in quality chances.”
Georgie Christensen played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Cavaliers to obtain her third shutout of the season. Jamie Carney stopped three shots in the loss for the Eagles.
Concordia will resume competition on Sept. 20 when it travels to Cascade College to open Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
