Northwest U. Shuts Out Corban 3-0
KIRKLAND, Wash. - Northhwest University men's soccer team defeated Corban College 3-0 in their Cascade Conference opener tonight in Kirkland.
Defense was the key for both teams as the first half ended in a 0-0 deadlock. Northwest out shot Corban (2-4-1, 1-1 CCC) 8 to 2, but Corban's Aaron Franklin's 5 saves prevented the Eagles from getting on the scoreboard.
Northwest (3-2-2, 1-0 CCC) got its offense going in the second half as Brandon Screen (Jr., Silverdale, Wash.) knocked in a goal at the 64:53 mark on an assist by teammate WiIbur Velasco (Jr., Kennewick, Wash.). Screen scored again less than 8 minutes later on a through ball and knocked the ball in from 2 yards out. Velasco was credited with the assist. Freshman Luke Fischer (Kalispell, Mont.) ended the NU scoring at the 73:25 mark with his unassisted goal. Fischer ended the game with 5 shots, including 3 shots on goal. Screen finished with 6 shots and 4 shots on goal.
NU goalkeeper Kyle Wall (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) earned the shutout with one save as the tight NU defense held Corban without a shot in the second half and limited them to 2 shots in the first.
Northwest U. will host Evergreen State College on Saturday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. at Lake Washington HS Stadium. Corban returns home to Salem, Oregon to take on Warner Pacific in a Saturday afternoon game at 2:00 p.m.
