Raiders Notch First Win of 2008
ASHLAND, Ore. - The Southern Oregon women’s soccer team scored its first victory of 2008 with a 3-2 victory over Holy Names today at University Field on the SOU campus.
The Raiders are now 1-5 on the season and open up Cascade Conference play Wednesday at Northwest Christian. Holy Names fell to 1-5 on the season.
SOU came out aggressive in the first half, coming away with 10 shots in the first 45 minutes.
Sophomore Kelly Clark got the Raiders on the board just before halftime, picking up a loose ball after a scramble in front of the net and tapping it in for a 1-0 SOU lead.
SOU freshman Kelly Clark broke away from the defense at the 61 minute mark to find the back of the net and the Raiders looked to be cruising with a 2-0 lead.
But it didn’t take long for that lead to disappear.
Holy Names’ Maria Gonzalez trimmed the lead to 2-1 with a high arching shot from 30 yards out that just escaped the stretched out reach of SOU keeper Jessica Kuehlwien at the 72 minute mark. Six minutes later Brittanie Perez slashed to the goal and got a perfect pass from Gonzalez to tie the score at 2-2 at 78:10.
The young Raiders quickly responded as freshman Katie Griffith used some nice one-on-one moves to break free and score the winning goal just before the 80 minute mark.
SOU finished with 12 shots on goal, including a team-high five from Griffith and two from Cates.
After Wednesday’s conference match with Northwest Christian, the Raiders return home for a pair of non-conference matches against Westminster (Friday) and Western Oregon (Sunday).
