CCC Players of the Week Named in Fall Sports

The following Cascade Collegiate Conference student-athletes were recognized as conference Players of the Week in their respective sports for the period Sept. 15-21.

Men’s Soccer

Offensive – Northwest junior Brandon Screen (Bremerton, Wash.) tallied game-winning goals as NU opened its CCC campaign with shutout victories over Corban (3-0) and Evergreen (1-0). Screen finished the week with three goals. Other nominees: Wandi Ali, Cascade; Bryan Iotte, Concordia; Chris Price, Warner Pacific.

Defensive – Northwest junior keeper Kyle Wall (Seattle, Wash.) was named the CCC’s Defensive Player of the Week after recording his second and third shutouts of the season. Wall helped keep Corban and Evergreen off the scoreboard as NU opened CCC play with a pair of victories. Other nominees: Ted Latta, Warner Pacific; Aaron Reynolds, College of Idaho.

Women’s Soccer

Offensive – Corban sophomore Genessa Neeser (Pocatello, Idaho) moved from defense to the front line and responded with a pair of game-winning goals to earn CCC Offensive Player of the Week recognition. Neeser had a total of three goals in wins over Northwest Christian and Holy Names. Other nominees: Katie Griffith, Southern Oregon; Cristina Mcgahen, Eastern Oregon; Justine Pronovost, Concordia.

Defensive –Corban senior keeper Karyn Allen (Merlin, Ore.) turned back 14 shots and allowed just three goals in 205 minutes in helping the Warriors to a 2-0 record. Allen was named CCC Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts. Corban posted 1-0 and 4-3 wins over NCU and Holy Names, respectively. Other nominees: Jenna Peterson, Concordia.

Volleyball

Player – Oregon Tech senior outside hitter Krista Wooley (Reedsport, Ore.) sparked the Owls to wins over Corban and Concordia in earning CCC Player of the Week honors. In two matches, Wooley registered a .512 kill percentage (40 kills in 78 attempts) in addition to totaling 21 digs and three aces. Other nominees: Kandice Gleaves, Evergreen; Jessica Lea, Eastern Oregon; Naomi Reimer, College of Idaho; Mariana Toscano, Concordia; Mia Wortel, Southern Oregon.

Libero – Southern Oregon sophomore Maggie Rivers (Salem, Ore.) was named the CCC’s Libero of the Week. Rivers totaled 32 digs as SOU defeated Concordia and Corban in home matches. Rivers had 18 digs against Concordia and followed with 14 against Corban. Other nominees: Whitney Owen, College of Idaho; Sareena Simpson, Eastern Oregon; Krystie Vea, Oregon Tech.

Setter – Southern Oregon junior Lindsey Stone (Ashland, Ore.) captured CCC Setter of the Week accolades for the second consecutive week. Stone totaled 78 assists in two CCC matches, recording 43 against Concordia and 35 against Corban as SOU won both to improve to 5-1 in league play. Other nominees: Skyler Kamaka, Concordia; Madie Machurek, College of Idaho.

Cross Country

Male – Southern Oregon sophomore David Laney (Portland, Ore.) made an impressive 2008 debut last Saturday, placing fifth overall (25:02) in the men’s open division at the Sundodger Invitational to help lead the Raiders to the team title, which included an upset of third-ranked Simon Fraser. Other nominees: Caleb Goins, Corban; Jonathan Graves, Warner Pacific; Chris Grever, Concordia; Cam Starner, Eastern Oregon; Zeke Wilson, College of Idaho.

Female – College of Idaho sophomore Stephanie Helm (Challis, Idaho) earned CCC Runner of the Week honors after an impressive performance against a highly-rated field at the Bob Firman Invitational in Eagle, Idaho. Helm, who won last year’s individual crown at the CCC Championships, finished third overall in the 5K distance (18:34). Only a pair of runners from NCAA Division I BYU finished ahead of her. Other nominees: Marcella Bosch, Eastern Oregon; Ana Casillas, Evergreen; Alice Taylor, Concordia.

Golf

Male – Concordia senior Marc Arima (Meridian, Idaho) earned CCC Player of the Week honors after opening the season with a 20-stroke victory at the Northwest Christian Invitational. Arima fired an 11-under 205 in helping lead the Cavaliers to the team title. Other nominees: Joey Duwe, Corban; Brent McKee, Northwest Christian.

Female: Concordia junior Lindsay Aho (Brush Prairie, Wash.) was named the CCC Player of the Week after capturing medalist honors at the Northwest Christian Invitational. Aho shot a 15-over 231 to lead the Cavaliers to the team championship. Other nominees: Ashley King, Northwest Christian; Heidi Murphy, College of Idaho.
