Oregon Tech's Megan Christensen led the Owls with nine kills, but it was not enough to overcome a 3-0 SOU win. Both teams are now tied for 1st in the CCC standings with 6-1 records.
No. 17 Owls Struggle, Southern Hands Tech First League Loss
Klamath Falls, Ore. – The No. 17 ranked Oregon Tech volleyball team’s six match win streak and perfect 6-0 league record came to a screeching halt, when arch-rival Southern Oregon spoiled the evening with a decisive 3-0 win over the host team 25-18, 26-24, 25-21 tonight at Danny Miles Court. The loss drops the Owls to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in CCC action. The Raiders move their overall record to 8-7 and into first place with Tech at 6-1 in CCC play.
The Owls could not overcome sloppy passing or all-around play tonight, as SOU jumped out to a 15-10 lead to open the evening’s festivities, on their way to putting Tech away 25-18 in set one.
The Owls then began to show some life when they would hold a 12-7 lead over the Raiders in set two. However, that was short lived when the Raiders chipped at the five point deficit to tie the set at 15-15 and eventually took an 18-17 lead. Tech then responded with their largest run of the night of six points to go up 23-18, and to what seemed like a sure win in set two. The Raiders then were able to claw back, as they closed the gap to 23-22, tied the set at 24-24 and then finally putting the final two points away to secure a set two win at 26-24.
SOU would take that momentum into the third and final match when they secured a 15-12 lead on their way to finishing off the Owls 25-21, giving Tech their first home loss and first league loss of the season.
Megan Christensen (So. Klamath Falls, OR) led the Owls in kills tonight with nine, followed by eight kills and a team high seven digs by senior outside hitter Krista Wooley (Reedsport, OR).
Samantha Yutzie (So. Sublimity, OR) led all players with 16 kills on 27 attempts while setter Lindsey Stone (Jr. Ashland, OR) handed out 41 assists and both Becky Johnstone (Fr. Lake Arrowhead, CA) and Leanne Stennett (So. Encinitas, CA) had a match high nine digs.
Tech will travel to Eugene to take on Northwest Christian University on Friday, September 26th for their next league action.
