BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore. – Fernando Montiel scored a goal in each half to push Cascade to a 3-1 win over Northwest Christian in CCC soccer play today at a rainy and windy Williams & Smith Field. Cascade improves to 4-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference, while NCU drops to 1-5-1 and 0-3.

The Thunderbirds struck just 9 minutes into the game as Wondi Ali placed a nice through pass to Montiel who beat NCU keeper Cuyler Zeigler low and left. Though Cascade continued to control much of the action the visiting Beacons managed to push forward on several occasions in the first half, earning 5 corner kicks. One of those corner kicks resulted in the equalizer for Northwest Christian. After the ball was crossed into the box from the corner flag, a T-Bird defender put a foot to the volley in a clearance attempt. The ball went to Carlos Sandoval’s feet who beat a diving Efrain Vargas into the upper corner from 18 yards.

Moments later however, Montiel was again causing trouble for the Beacons as he was pulled down in the box. Ali was called on to convert the penalty try, which he did with 9:00 left in the first half.

Cascade added on an insurance goal with under a minute gone in the second period as Montiel broke free after a long crossing pass from Juan Manzanarez. “This was a good win for our club after a disappointing loss yesterday (at Warner Pacific),” said Cascade head coach Mike Alfers. “Fernando and Wondi were very active up top, and made a lot of good runs. We got caught napping a couple times defensively, but overall I’m pleased with our effort.”

Cascade held the advantage in shots 19-10, while NCU led in corner kicks 8-4.

The T-Birds will head to Corban College this Saturday as CCC play continues, while Northwest Christian travels to Oregon Tech.
