Corban Land-Slide Happens in Sweep of T-birds of Cascade

SALEM, Ore. – Freshman Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) registered a team-high 11 kills to go along with a trio of seniors that combined for 21 kills, as Corban's women's volleyball swept the Thunderbirds of Cascade, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-19), Friday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center to kick off Alumni Weekend.
After a weekend in which the Warriors dropped a pair of match in the Southern Oregon area, Corban quickly finished off the visiting T-birds in one hour and twenty minutes for its fastest victory of the season so far.
In the opening set, Cascade jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead behind the serving of Carla Crowder before Corban used a 5-1 run to knot the set at 5-all. During the run, senior Rachel Gowen (Oregon City, Ore.) registered a pair of kills to go along with a Land kill and a service ace by senior Rashelle Davenport (Kalama, Wash.). With the score tied at 17-17, Corban used a 5-2 run to take command before closing out the set by three points (25-22) via a Cascade service error.
In the middle set, Corban grabbed a quick 3-1 lead thanks to a pair of Davenport kills before Cascade mounted a 3-1 run highlighted by a Meagan Stanley kill to tie the set at 4-all. With the score 16-13 in favor of the visiting T-birds, Corban got three straight points capped off by a Land kill to knot the set at 16-16. An attack error by Cascade tied the set for the sixth and final time at 19-all before Corban used a closing 6-0 run that saw five T-bird attack errors and a Davenport kill for the 25-19 win and a two-set lead heading into the break.
In the third and final set, Corban got a quartet of kills from Land, sophomore Heather Anderson (Corbett, Ore.), and senior Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) to erase a one-point deficit and take a 7-4 lead. The Warriors would push their lead to as much as five points (21-16) following a service ace from junior Andrea Potloff (Aumsville, Ore.) before closing out the set and match with another 25-19 victory and a three-set sweep.
Along with Land, Davenport registered eight kills to go along with Reeher's seven and Gowen's six. Junior Amy Thompson (Oregon City, Ore.) and freshman Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) combined to run the Warriors' potent offensive attack, as Thompson handed out a team-high 21 assists and Dees registered 12. Sophomore libero Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.) anchored Corban's back line with a match-high 14 digs, while Reeher and Gowen handle the Warriors' net defensively with two blocks each.
Cascade was led by Natalie Forgan, who registered a match-high 13 kills, while Natalie Staggs and Stanley added 9 and 5 kills respectively. Crowder handed out a match-high 27 assists for the Thunderbirds, while six Cascade players combined for 34 digs with Crowder leading the charge with eight.
With the win, Corban returns its overall record to the .500 mark at 6-6, including 4-3 in conference play. Meanwhile, Cascade drops to 4-8 overall, 1-6 in conference action. The Warriors return to action tomorrow night -- Saturday, September 27th -- when they host the Knights of Warner Pacific beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
