Concordia Cuts 11 Strokes in Final Round of Grand Canyon Invite
GOODYEAR, Ariz.– With all but one team in the 15-squad field posting lower scores in the second round, the Concordia women’s golf team sustained their position to finish in ninth place at the Grand Canyon Fall Invitational on Tuesday.
After posting a 332 on Monday, Concordia (332-321—653) fired a 33-over 321 for an 11-stroke improvement in the final round, concluding the tournament two strokes back of eighth-place Mesa State (330-321—651).
California Baptist (313-301—614) held on for the team title by five strokes despite pushes by host Grand Canyon (314-305—619) and third-place finisher Sonoma State (322-300—622). With an event-low, 12-over 300 on Tuesday, Sonoma State jumped from fifth to third in the final round.
Firing a 3-over 74 on the second day, Concordia’s Lindsay Aho jumped four places to finish in a five-way tie for fourth place among the individuals.
With a 2-under 69, Sonoma State’s Chelsa Helget (78-69—147) moved from a tie for 12th into medalist honors on the second day, edging Lubbock Christian’s Kelly Rainbolt (75-73—148) and Grand Canyon’s Jacqueline Sneddon (73-75—148). Helget’s 69 was four strokes lower than the next best round among the 82 individual golfers.
Sara Taylor (88-79—167) shot Concordia’s second best round of the day with an 8-over 79 to eight spots. As CU’s No. 2 individual, Kim Tilton (84-81—165) improved to positions into a tie for 41st and Kim Lindow (86-87—173) cut six spots on the second day to finish in a tie for 56th as the team’s fourth scorer.
Concordia resumes its fall season at a Cascade Collegiate Conference event hosted by The College of Idaho at River Bend Golf Course on Oct. 6-7.
