ASHLAND, Ore. - The 12th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team used big matches by senior Mia Wortel and freshman Sarah Holgen to score a 25-14, 26-28, 25-19, 25-22 victory over ninth-ranked College of Idaho.

Southern Oregon is now 3-5 overall and 1-0 in Cascade Conference play. College of Idaho fell to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

Holgen finished with a team-high 13 kills for the Raiders. Wortel had 11 kills and four blocks. Junior setter Lindsey Stone finished with a match-high 46 assists.

The Yotes were led by Sarah Buhler’s match-high 18 kills.

The Raiders came out on fire in the first set, hitting .500 as a team and holding the Yotes to a .027 attack percentage.

In the second set, the two teams were tied at 20-20 before a Wortel kill and ace by Maggie Rivers gave SOU a 22-20 lead.

After the Yotes cut the lead one, Wortel added another kill and a attack error by the Yotes gave Southern set point at 24-21. But the Yotes responded with four straight points to take a 25-24 lead and after the two teams traded points, COI won the set 28-26.

SOU took the early advantage in the third set as a Yote service error and attack error gave the Raiders a 16-11 lead and the Raiders never looked back.

The fourth set was much of the same as after the two teams were tied at 10-10, SOU went on a 6-2 run to take control and put the match away.

The Raiders had three players in double-digits with digs. Rivers led the Raiders with 16 digs, followed by Becky Johnstone with 13 and Samantha Yutzie with 11.

Yutzie and Leah Bergstrom had nine kills for SOU, while Heather Porter had seven kills and only one error.

The Raiders host Eastern Oregon Saturday night at 5 p.m.
