Concordia Thwarts Thunderbirds for 15th Straight
PORTLAND, Ore.—The 20th-ranked Concordia women’s basketball team more than doubled Cascade College in the first half and never looked back with a 92-55 win in Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Saturday night.
With the win, Concordia’s 15th straight, the Cavaliers improved to 15-1 on the year and remained undefeated in CCC play with an 8-0 mark. Cascade dropped to 8-5 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Concordia’s Rebecca Gimeno opened up the game’s scoring with a three-point basket with the aid of an assist by twin sister Angela Gimeno. Cascade returned down the court with a layup by Amy Russell then used a Concordia turnover for a Karli Thomas field goal down low for the quick 4-3 lead. A three-point miss by Concordia would lead to a Russell three pointer on the opposite end for a 7-3 Thunderbird lead.
Unfortunately for Cascade, the Thunderbirds would post just three more field goals the rest of the half as Concordia rolled to 46-22 advantage at intermission. The Cavaliers shot 51 percent from the field in the first compared to 24 percent for Cascade and forced nearly a turnover a minute as the Thunderbirds gave the ball away 18 times through the first 20 minutes.
Concordia started the second half with 14 straight points to take a commanding 60-22 advantage en route to the 37-point victory.
Ann Snodderly paced the Cavs with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Rachel Scarpelli added 14 points and Angela Gimeno an additional 13 for three CU players in double figures.
Russell led the Thunderbirds with 14 points while CCC scoring leader Kristina Schumacher was held to six points after shooting 1 of 12 from the field.
Cascade ended with 30 turnovers, exactly twice as many as the home Cavaliers. The Cavs shot 50 percent for the contest, including 5 of 13 from three-point territory. Cascade connected on just 29 percent of its attempts.
Concordia returns to action on Jan. 16 when it travels to No. 15-ranked The College of Idaho (15-1, 6-0 CCC). Both teams will enter the contest riding 15-game winning streaks. Opening tip is set for 5:30 p.m. in Caldwell, Idaho.
