CCC Finalists Named for Oregon Sports Awards

BEAVERTON -- The 57th annual Oregon Sports Awards will celebrate the state’s top performers in 2008 when it returns Sunday, Feb. 8 to the Tiger Woods Center on the Nike World Campus.

The show will honor the top athletes, coaches, teams and organizations from the calendar year 2008.

The event starts at 7 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m.

A total of five CCC student-athletes and one CCC team (Oregon Tech men's basketball) are among the finalists vying for special honors.

CCC finalists for the Ad Rutschman Small College Male Athlete of the Year are Mark Carollo (Eastern Oregon men's basketball), Ryan Fiegi (Oregon Tech men's basketball) and Nik Kay (Concordia track and field. Finalists from the CCC for the Ad Rutschman Small College Female Athlete of the Year are Annie Hess (Concordia track and field) and Jackie Pronovost (Concordia soccer).

Ahmad Rashad, an Emmy award-winning broadcaster and former football star at the University of Oregon and in the NFL, will be the broadcast host for the third consecutive year.

Bill Schonely, the Portland Trail Blazers’ founding broadcaster/ambassador, is the event’s ambassador and host.

Sports celebrities from Oregon’s past and present will be on hand to present the awards.

Winners will be announced in 14 categories, including professional, major college, small college, high school and Special Olympics sports.

A 78-member, statewide panel of voters selected the winners and finalists. There are 65 finalists in 11 of the categories. In addition, merit awards will be presented during the show, along with the Lou Burge Special Olympics Athlete of the Year Award and the Les Schwab Friend of Sports Award, which goes to a corporation, group or individual for contributions to local sports.

Tickets are $50 each. They include complimentary beverages and hors d’oeuvres before the show, along with desserts and coffee afterward.

Comcast SportsNet will air the Oregon Sports Awards at 8 p.m. on Feb. 9. The show will be replayed on Feb. 10 at 10 p.m., Feb. 13 at 10 p.m., Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., Feb. 25 at 9 a.m. and March 1 at 9 p.m., and it will be available via ON DEMAND starting Feb. 14.
